Nerikomi Workshop W Sarah Chatawanich: Aug 16 2024, 5:30-9~pm
Sarah Chatawanich: I have been a working artist for over 20 years within a wide range of disciplines including acrylic painting, mixed media art, graphic design, and ceramics. I previously owned and operated an art gallery in Dallas, TX and later worked as a graphic artist and web designer for Paramount and Dreamworks studios in Hollywood. I have been working with porcelain ceramics for over 6 years, and my current work focuses on the Japanese art of Nerikomi. In building my nerikomi pieces, I mix stains with porcelain to create colored clays, which are then layered into blocks and sliced through to reveal unique patterns. Most of my pieces are sanded at various stages and capped by a final polish that creates a smooth, vibrantly colored surface.
Join Sarah Chatawanich and learn the Japanese art of nerikomi. In this hands on workshop, we will explore various methods of coloring clay and techniques for layering and stacking it into designs. We will provide colored clay for you to experiment with while creating your own nerikomi block. You will then have time to hand build an item or two from your block. You are welcome to take home the clay remaining in your block.
**Basic hand building techniques and ceramics knowledge are required to join this class. Please reach out if you have questions about this.
All necessary tools and clay will be provided. Items will be fired twice and coated with a clear glaze. Nerikomi needs to dry slowly so these pieces will take around a month to be fired completely. We estimate the class will take 3-4 hours.
Doors to the studio will be open @5pm, please arrive around 5:15 so we can make sure and start class on time.
