Position Summary and Responsibilities

The Ceramics Studio Technician maintains a safe, inclusive, and efficient studio environment. This role involves coordinating with Garnet and the Glazed staff to create community support and a smoothly running studio. Key responsibilities include equipment maintenance, material management, ordering materials, managing kiln area, pugging clay, cleaning, training and supervising work trade volunteers workers and assisting staff, and students. This position comes with a 24hr studio membership and options for attending workshops and classes we hold.

As an instructor at Glazed we expect a love of clay and knowledge of multiple forms and techniques. We can help you learn how to teach, but previous experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage clay and glaze materials efficiently, including inventory control, ordering supplies, and organizing storage;

  • Ensure the ceramics area is clean, safe, and compliant with safety protocols;

  • Lead kiln loading, firing, and scheduling in collaboration with students and faculty;

  • Prepare materials such as clay, glazes, and slips for classes and programmatic needs;

  • Maintain and update the studio’s inventory of clay and glaze recipes;

  • Support students by providing training on equipment use, supervising student workers, and offering assistance during technical hours;

  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of kilns, wheels, and other ceramics equipment and furniture, including managing contracted services. Maintain records of repairs and servicing.

Experience

  • 2+ years related experience preferred;

  • Working knowledge of throwing and hand building skills;

  • Knowledge of ceramics studio facilities, equipment, materials, repairs, and processes;

  • Experience with electric kilns;

  • Experience with reclaiming clay;

  • Strong awareness of safety protocols and ability to implement them effectively;

  • Proficiency with basic computer operations, including Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat);

  • An understanding and interest in working on social media for the studio.

Compensation

This is a part-time position ~20 hours/ week of tech time (this may fluctuate with events) and the option for 4~10 hours of teaching a week.

Compensation:
Tech: $17~20/ hour based on expereince
Teaching: $25/ hour once fully trained
Potential for moving into a salaried position in the future
